The House Finch is a fairly common species in my area of the country. But, it’s still a delight to catch a glimpse of the raspberry red flash of color when the male comes into the yard. The female doesn’t don any bright plumage, but she is still beautiful.
House Finches enjoy sunflower and safflower seeds. We offer these seeds without millet to discourage House Sparrows from making a negative impact on the Bluebirds, Purple Martins and Tree Swallows that occupy cavity nest sites, including the nest boxes and Purple Martin houses we present for the native species.
This male House Finch is eating the blossoms on our Pear Tree! Who knew?
