Inspired by Dogs & Nature
Blue Jays like peanuts. I observe them at the feeder where they select one (sometimes with quite a bit of deliberation), before flying off with their treasure.
If they stick around the area, I sometimes see them holding the peanut in their claw against a branch and using their strong beak to crack it open. Other birds do the same with various foods, such as the Chickadee or Tufted Titmouse might do with a sunflower seed.
Many times in the past I’ve seen Blue Jays picking up fallen acorns under an oak tree and I’ve wondered how they can break open that very tough shell. Nature is full of amazing strategies.
